Gay marriage bill, other major issues sit in limbo as Senate returns from August recess
Gay marriage regulation is one of a few significant issues up in the air for the Senate as it gets back from its August break Tuesday with midterm decisions under two months away. The House of Representatives passed a bill to classify same-sex marriage privileges in July after Justice Clarence Thomas brought up issues about Supreme Court point of reference on gay marriage in an assessment this spring. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., promised that his chamber will likewise decide on same-sex marriage. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., one of the main co-backers of the Senate's gay marriage bill, told PBS Wisconsin in late July she trusts a vote will occur "toward the beginning of September." But the Senate faces a pressed timetable before the midterm races.
